Dr. Alberto Barcelo, MD, MSc

Dr. Barcelo was born in Cuba and graduated from the Medical School at the University of Havana in 1981. He received a degree in Epidemiology at the Faculty of Public Health at the same university in 1989. He worked at the National Institute of Endocrinology in Havana between 1989 and 1992 where he participated in clinical and epidemiological research related to diabetes.

Dr. Barcelo taught epidemiology at the Medical School at the University of Havana where he held a faculty appointment between 1988 and 1992. He worked during two years in Mozambique as Deputy Chief Medical Officer in the province of Maputo. In Canada, he worked at the Laboratory Center for Disease Control in Ottawa (1995), and also at the Health and Community Service of the Province of New Brunswick where he occupied the position of epidemiologist (1996-1999). He joined the Pan American Health Organization in 1999 and is a Regional Advisor at the Unit of Non Communicable Diseases. Since 2005, Dr. Barcelo has held an adjunct appointment as Associate Professor at the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the University of Miami. His interest in non communicable diseases has given him extensive expertise in surveillance and quality of care, with a particular emphasis on developing countries. He is currently involved in projects in Central and South America, Mexico and the Caribbean. He has published on subjects related to chronic diseases, the prevalence of diabetes, quality of care and health economics.
