Dr. Francisca Ayo Akala, MD, MPH, MSc

Dr. Ayo Akala, a Nigerian national, graduated from medical school at the University of Ibadan, College of Medicine, Nigeria in 1991. She also holds a Master in Public Health degree from the University of Lagos, Nigeria and a Master in Health Services Management degree from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK.

She is currently a Senior Public Health Specialist in the Human Development Sector of the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Region of the World Bank, where she works on regional public health issues.

Prior to joining the World Bank in 2000, Dr. Akala practiced clinical medicine in Nigeria and worked on national public health initiatives including primary health care development and polio eradication. Since joining the Bank, Dr. Akala has worked on the management of chronic conditions at the national and regional level. She has also authored the Bank's regional strategy for HIV/AIDS aimed at supporting interventions to prevent the further spread of this chronic condition that could have significant social and economic consequences for the MENA Region if not addressed early enough.
